The 6th Edition of the widely used
professional/academic book “Designing
with Geosynthetics” by Robert M. Koerner was published in January 2012. The book’s structure follows previous
editions but new material has been added addressing sustainability, failure
situations, along with updated text and references.
Since a new publisher, Xlibris Press, was used, the
book’s dimensions are slightly reduced thereby requiring two volumes. In Volume 1 (pages 1-508) there are chapters
on geosynthetics, geotextiles, geogrids and geonets while in Volume 2 (pages
509-914) there are chapters on geomembranes, geosynthetic clay liners, geofoam
and geocomposites. There are many
worked-out examples in each chapter and each chapter also has homework problems
(for which there is a separate solutions manual).
Since this new edition was developed electronically
and is printed on-demand, the price is drastically reduced from previous
editions. The costs for each volume of
the book from different booksellers are currently as follows:

thirty-five years of teaching, research, writing and consulting. He received his Ph.D. in Geotechnical
Engineering from Duke University. Dr.
Koerner was a professor at Drexel University for 36 years and Founder of the
Geosynthetic Institute (1991). He was the Director at GSI until 2014 and then
became the Emeritus Director. He was a registered Professional Engineer, a
Distinguished Member of ASCE, a Geotechnical Engineering Diplomate, an Honorary
Member of the International Geosynthetics Society and a member of the U. S.
National Academy of Engineering. Bob has
authored and co-authored approximately 650 papers on geosynthetics and
geotechnical topics in journals and at national and internal conferences. His most widely used publication is this book
entitled “Designing with Geosynthetics”,
now in its sixth edition.
